First streach and
tear the cotten ball into a long stringy thing the size of the fuse you want.
Pour some hot water into a pot and slowly while mixing, pour in a 20 part bp and
1 or 2 part dextrin mixture. Then drop the cotten string in the pot and stir it
aroung for a minute or two with a plastic rod. With rubber gloves on, roll it
around in your hand with your fingers to rub the bp in it better. Then put it
back in the pot and strir it around for another minute. Twist it tightly to get
out all of the water and hang it in the sun by pining it to a fence or something
to dry.
Black match is probibley the most widley used fuse. It is easy to make and can be made by the most novise of pyrotechnition. But it burns quite fast even though it's considered a slow burning fuse; an inch per second! |
Quick match is just black match wrapped aroung a paper tube. When lit, the tube will cause the sparks coming from the black match to ignite the rest of the black match core with incredible speed. |
Green fuse, also known as visco fuse, cannon fuse, safty fuse, and others, is called green fuse because it has a lacquer coat aroung it that, in most cases, is died green. But it can also be other colores like red, white, and blue. It is commercially made by machines, but here is a way to make it your self: |
Make a mixure of 10 parts black powder
and 1 part dextrin (all by weight) in the bowl. Slowly while mixing, pour hot
water in bowl to make a pasty substance with twice the consistancy of glue. Then
put it in the syringe filling it almost to the top. Put the plunger on, turn it
upside down, and drepress out any air. Put the nozzle of the syringe in the
hallow string and slowly depress the plunger so all of the mixture is
consistantly in the string. Continue injecting the BP paste until it is visibly
exuding from the end opposite of injection. This means that the core is as full
as it is going to get. Then lay the string on a flat surface and roll it around
on the surface with your hand. This will further even out it's consistancy. Now
allow it to dry in the sun for about 24 hours while turning it over every hour
or so to keep it even. Then apply a thin coat of 25% lacquer with a paint brush
to the outside of the string and let it dry for another 24 hours to insure
minumum moisture content. Once finished drieing it is ready for use. This method
takes a few days and is alot more work then ordering some for only a few bucks,
but gives you that make-it-yourself accomplishent felling.
AFTERTHOUGHT: This would only be worth doing like 15 feet or something, and after around a couple feet, the hallow string start to fuck up. If you deside to do this, you may want to experiment putting the laquer on the string first, just try not to flatten it. |
Elecrical ignition is by far the safest way to ignite any pyrotechnic devise. One could detonate his pyrotechnic devise 100's of feet away, within fractions of a second when the the switch is activated, all insuring that no one will get hurt. |
This isn't hard at all with the right meterials. First drill some holes were needed. With the remote I used I didn't need to drill any holes, after tearing out all of the crap there were lots of holes were the buttens were. I did this by unscrewing it and poping of the top. With the top off, tape all of the stuff to where you want them to be on the inside so they wont move around. Then connect the battery to the butten, the butten to the switch, and the battery and the switch to the outside with the wires. Check out the diagram to see how it should go all together. |
Elecrical igniters are the things that connect to the the wires from your box above, and go into the explosive device. When elecricity runs through them they burn enough to ignite the explosive. There are ways to make them, or you could just buy them at a hobby store in the model rocketry section (solar igniters). Here is how to make them: |
First strip 1/8" on one end of the two wires. Then cut a 3/8 inch
section of .01 inch nichrome wire. This piece of nichrome wire is spliced into
both of the wires at the striped end of the wire, solder the splices to insure a
good circuit, and bend it to form a V shape. Then use the tape and a small piece
of wood to resist deformation and breaks when being used by plasing a small
piece of wood in the middle and taping in on the other side keeping the to wires
from moving around. After that mix 60% patassium perclorate, 38% sulfer, and 2%
white glue to form a pasty mass. Dip the nichrome wire part into it and and let
it dry. You may want to test these before actually useing them to make sure that
they work by hooking them to a detonater, turning it on, and activating the
butten; they are sensitive to 2 "c" batteries or larger.
Another way to make them is simply by wrapping some copper wire around a srand of steel wool and hooking that up to a detonater. To rig an electrical ignition, you need a detonater and an igniter discribed above, and at least 50 feet of speaker cable. Connect on end of the cable to the detonater, and the other end to the igniter. Place the igniter in what you want to set off and detonat it. |
