FIREWORKS
This section
is all about how to make your own fireworks.
All of these homemade fireworks
are basic and simple to make.
NOTE: These can be very dangerous and should be
handled with care and made with all of the right safty precations and equipment.
Salutes:
M80
Glue one end
plug in one side of the tube and drill a hole in the middle of the tub. Stick in
the fuse and glue it to the tube. Then fill it with bp, flash powder, or whistle
mix. Glue the other end plug on and light; makes a boom. |
CHERRY BOMB
- Two very small end caps
- Fine sawdust
- Wood Glue
- fuse
- Flash powder
First you need to make small end caps. Click here to learn how. Make
two, one bigger than the other so one can fit inside the other.
Take the smaller paper cup and fill it with flash powder. Spread glue on the
outside of the end plug, and pull the other one over it. Squeeze them together
and let the glue dry. Very carefully, poke a hole all the way to the powder
center. Insert the fuse, and surround the fuse with some glue and let dry. Mix
the saw dust and the wood glue until you get a paste similar to oatmeal. Hold
the bomb by the fuse and dip the bomb in the paste until the paste covers the
ball 1/8 inch thick. Hang the bomb by the fuse and let it dry. |
PALUMNA
- Paper
- Tape
- Fuse
- Bp, flash powder, or whistle mix
|
|
Fold a peice of paper about an inch wide and 6 or so long into a triangle, glue one edge and when dried pour bp into the other edge and put a fuse in it. Then keep
folding paper with a drop of glue for evey fold untill you have a few layers.
Duck tape it making sure there are no holes. |
Morters
SHELL MANUFACTURE
Also known as shells,
morters are the grand daddy of all fireworks. They're what professional
pyrotechnictions focus on. They can be kind of tricky and timely to make, but
after a few times, you'll have it down.
- Shell/Cassing: the bigger the the cassing, the bigger it will be.
- Stars
- Tissue paper
- BP coated rice hulls
- Flash powder
- Green fuse
- Time fuse
- Plastic straw, the best fitting ones are 'flexi-straws'
You can buy the casing used to make these at pyrotechnic supliers. They can
range from a few inches to a few feet in diameter and $9 a dozen up. First
inseart about 1.25" of time fuse in one hemispheres of the shell with about half
of the length of the fuse still out of the shell and hot glue it to keap it
sealed. Then slip the straw of the fuse on the inside part of the shell and cut
it so it's just under the rim of the shell. Fill the staw almost to the top with
granulated black powder and use some tissue paper to plug it good and tight.
The best way to load the shell is to place the two hemispheres on cups.
Biggin loading the shell with stars by starting from the bottem and working your
way up, put a layer on the iside of both halves. Then but the bp coated rice
hulls on a piece of tissue paper, enough rice hulls and tissue paper to fill the
half. Hold the package of rice hulls by the paper and drop it into the shell.
The side with the fuse is a little harder though. Take the tissue paper and tear
a hole in the middle. Slide this over the straw, be carefull not to make the
stars fall. Then dump a cup full of rice hulls in the shell all at once, this
will stop the stars from falling. Trim the tissue paper on both halves of the
shell so it doesn't extend above the rim.
Dump a little bit of flash powder on both halves into the rice hulls. This
will give it a more powderfull break. Then close it. You can either close it by
snaping it together or holding a piece of cardboard on one half of the shell. To
do it the first way, align them together at the bottem with the inside half on
the inside and the outside on the outside. Then in one fast move, snap them
together. If you worry everything will go everywere you can do it the other way.
Just put a piece of coardboard, the thin kind like on folders and notepads on.
Then put that over the other piece, make sure they're aligned perfectly. Then
slowly slide the coardboard out from underneith it and snap them together. Then
seal the shell together by polling them aport just a hair. Using either Xylol or
Methylene Chloride, run the solvent aroung the seam with an eye droper or hobby
syringe or whatever, make sure there are no gaps or openings. The solvent will
melt the plastic together, but before this happens press the shell together
tightly. Now your shell is ready to be launched. (this discripition has been
paraphrased from unitednuclear.com) |
MORTERS & SHELL LAUNCHING
- Shell
- Quick match
- Big cardboard tube the diameter of your shell
- Flat wooden block
- Lift charge
First you need to make the morter. Take your wooden block and cut a round
dado like thing with a chisle so the tube can fit in it. Put some glue in it and
press the tube into it, clamp it lightly making sure you don't bend the tube but
to keep the tube on good and strait. Let it dry for an hour befor use.
To prepair you shell for launch first flip the shell over and slit the time
fuse open to a depth of about 1/4". Then insert some black match into that and
secure it with dental floss and tape. Now flip the shell on its side. Dip the
fuse ring into some solvent, like Xylol or Methylene, and insert it into the top
hole. Run 4 feet of quick match through the fuse and ending at the black match.
It doesn't have to be actually touching the black match becuase it will be
ignited by the lift charge. Use caurse granulated black powder for the lift
charge. Here is the amounts needed per shell size:
Shell Sizes |
4" |
6" |
8" |
Caorse Granulated Black Bowder (b) |
60 |
100 |
200 |
Put the right amount of lift charge for your shell into a paper cone cup and
tape it to the bottem of the shell. Put this into your morter, leaving the
quickmatch out the top of it. Tear of the paper of the quick match to make at
least 12" of black match. When you lit it, the quick match/black match will
ignite the lift charge, igniting the time fuse which should not detonate the
shell untill it is hundreds of feet in the air. |
Other fireworks
SPARKLER BOMB
- Sparklers
- Firm canister, medicine canister, etc.
- Drill
First, drill a hole in the lid. Then crush up the sparklers and put that in
the canister. Stick another sparkler in the hole that you drilled and put the
lid on. When you light the sparkler, it will light the other sparkler mix,
making sparks and such. |
BOTTLE ROCKET
- Dowel
- Flash Powder
- Tube
- Paper end plugs
- Rocket engine, perferably a C73
- 2 fuses
First tape, epoxy, or glue a fuse to the rocket engine. Then make the
explosion part by putting some flash powder into a tube and seal it with some
paper end plugs. Put a fuse from the back of the rocket engine to the morter and
glue it, make them as close together as possible. Tape and/or glue all this to a
dowl with the rocket engine in the middle and the morter on the top. If you glue
it too, tape it as well. The glue will help it hold better with more heavy types
of these rockets like a double banger. For this you will also need a more
powerful engine such as a D or E.
When you lite it have it in a large tube of some sort with a solid base or a
bottle if the rocket is small enough. When lit, the fuse ignites the rocket and
when the rocket is out of fule, the second fuse should have been lit which lites
the explosion part of the rocket making a bang high in the sky. |
SHELL ON A STICK
- A bottle rocket, manufacture discribed above
- Morter
A shell on a stick is just my witty name for a shell that
works like a bottle rocket. Just make a bottle rocket discribed above, but
instead of a blasting cap or firework on top, replace that with a shell. To make
shells see the discription about it above on this page.

STAR MINE
- Cup/jar/can/etc
- BP/stars/sparkler mix/whatever you want
- Fuse
|
|
This is a pretty simple firework but is pretty cool. All you
have to do is mix all that you wan't to be put in it in a cup, jar, can, any
thing that is a few inches wide and tall. The main thing it needs is stars. You
can't put any flash powder in because it will just explode, it won't shot out
the stars and stuff like it should. Put a fuse in it from the side, tape it up a
few layers., and lite it. |
WHISTLER
- Whistle mix
- Tube
- Fuse
- Paper end plugs
First seal
one end of the tube with a paper end plug. Then put in the fuse. Pour in the
whistle mix. Poke a small hole large enough to fit the fuse through it and slide
that over it into the tub to keep the whistle mix from falling out before you
let it scream. |
SMOKE 'BOMB'
- Smoke powder
- Tube
- Fuse
- Paper end pluges
First
seal one end of the tube with a paper end plug. Then put the fuse in. Pour in
the smoke powder. If it is wet mix or multen mix pour it in before it dries.
That simple. If it is wet mix or multen mix put it in the sun for a few hours to
let it harden. If it is dry mix make a hole in another end plug large enough to
fit a fuse through it. Slid that through the fuse and into the tube to make sure
the smoke powder doesn't fall out. Smoke bombs are easy to make and are fun for
some reason. |
Commercial Firework Modifications
WHISTLER BANGER: The old fashioned way
- Any whistler(many brands)
- Your foot
This is an old one. Get your whistler, stomp on it, lite it, run, and jump up and down
saying "ya that was fun mommy!" This should be a cheap thrill for babies. |
WHISTLER BANGER: The safe Way
- Any whistler(many brands)
- Some plyers
- Tape
But if
you still want to do it, do it the safe way. Sometimes the whistle mix comes out
and covers the fuse so when you lite it, it blows up almost instently. So the
safe way is to tape the top and bottem remembering to not cover the fuse. Take
your pliers and crush it, you should be able to feel the whistle mix crushing.
And then lite. |
BLOOM FLOWER TORCH
- All you need are two bloom flowers!
Now this one is
one of the more stupider things I've done, even though it's not really a
modification-just fun. Take one of your bloom flowers and lite it, make sure you
watch were the flame comes out, it should be on the end where the fuse is, but I
don't want you to get burned so make sure it is. If it is, take your other one,
lite it, but this time hold on to it on the end that the torch doesn't
come out! It's pretty cool. If you want you can hold it with pliers for the
first time, or use a jumping jack (the same thing but alot smaller) and hold
that with the pliers. When you do this, a torch like colored flame comes out of
the end and lasts for a few seconds. |
